Watch on YouTubeChoosing a car seat begins with understanding how your child will ride now and as they grow. In Gina's Car Seats 101 educational video, she explains the major car seat categories and why fit, correct use, and developmental readiness matter more than a brand name.
Many families choose a portable rear-facing-only infant car seat that can detach from its vehicle base and connect to a compatible stroller. Others begin with a convertible or all-in-one car seat approved for their newborn's size. These larger seats generally stay installed in the vehicle, so the baby is transferred into a newborn-approved stroller seat or bassinet. Neither path is universally right for every family.

Rear-facing-only, portable seats designed for smaller babies. Check the exact seat's minimum and maximum weight, height, and head-clearance rules. Portability and stroller compatibility are their main convenience advantages.
Designed for rear-facing use followed by forward-facing use with an internal harness. Some models fit newborns; others have different minimum requirements. They generally stay in the vehicle and do not attach to strollers.
Typically offer rear-facing, forward-facing harness, and belt-positioning booster modes. Each mode has its own limits. One seat may cover multiple stages, but fit and practical usability should be reassessed as a child grows.
These forward-facing-only seats begin with an internal harness and later convert to a belt-positioning booster. Gina highlights their usefulness when a child has outgrown a convertible seat's harness height but is not yet ready to sit correctly in a booster throughout every trip.
High-back and backless boosters position the vehicle lap-and-shoulder belt on an appropriately sized and mature child. Check the child's fit, the belt path, vehicle head support, and ability to remain properly seated.
Keep children rear-facing as long as permitted by the car seat's stated height, weight, and fit limits. For installation, use the approved vehicle seat belt or lower anchors as instructed by the car seat and vehicle manufacturers; do not combine both methods unless expressly permitted. Check lower-anchor limits, recline indicators, tether instructions, and installation requirements for your exact seat and vehicle.
A child can outgrow a seat by height, seated shoulder position, head clearance, or another manufacturer-defined criterion before reaching the advertised maximum weight. Evaluate how the harness fits and whether the seat fits the vehicle and family routine.
Load legs, anti-rebound features, rigid LATCH connectors, and energy-management designs are worth understanding, but no optional feature replaces correct installation and appropriate rear-facing use. Explore the advanced car seat safety features guide.
